In 1997 after working at The Independent newspaper in Livermore, California, the dream of using my artistic abilities as a graphic designer became a reality with the birth of Blue Sky Graphics. I felt the name “blue sky” conveyed evolutionary ideas, boundless possibilities, and vibrant designs. In my early development I had various freelance projects including the production of a trade association’s monthly newsletter, branding and promotion of an East Bay restaurant, and the creation of murals, drawings and 3D figures for various educational events.
Hoping to gain more concentrated production experience led me to work as a designer at Bar None in Pleasanton, California. I developed my soft skills as well as my production techniques in assisting with website preparation and the creation of business cards, brochures, software and training manuals, direct mail, print ads and invitations. Working alongside the infamous Pets.com Sock Puppet was a lot of fun and seeing him in the latest television commercials always made me laugh. As the “spokespuppet” he pitched the company’s tagline, “Everyone Deserves a Second Chance—Bar None.”
While upgrading my design technical skills in 2007 at Las Positas College, I was responsible for producing all the publicity materials for the Performing Arts Department’s spring musical, “City of Angels.” Creating an original illustration to incorporate into the design was very enjoyable and reinforced my illustration techniques and attention to printing details. In The Design Shop of the college, I offered marketing solutions and created aesthetic comps for a Livermore olive grower’s website to establish its visual identity and presence. As the lead web designer I researched other olive oil businesses, collaborated with team members on the development of the site, advised the client on selecting photos from the photo shoot, and helped edit the copywriting to ensure the website’s success.
For a brief time I served as a web design intern at E-LOAN in Dublin, California. Observing the day to day work of the Creative Services and Marketing departments gave me insight into the world of internet technology at its best. My favorite project was compiling web pages that displayed the company’s television commercials, news broadcasts, and company meetings spanning nearly 10 years. Working on this project allowed me to view all commercials and to listen to and digitize the radio ads. Marketing research couldn’t be any better!
In 2008 my hopes for web design were dashed after the fall of E-LOAN due to the economic downturn. But then, another chapter of my life would begin. Working for the Livermore Valley Performing Arts Center from the first day proved to me that dreams do come true. At times I wanted to pinch myself thinking this wasn’t real, but it was and it’s been an amazing ride!
Due to the pandemic I’ve been furloughed until further notice. So for now I’m having fun updating my website!
Thanks so much for visiting!
